BOXER REBELLION: A rebellion led by a secret
society, called the I-ho-ch'uan. Its members were
xenophobic Chinese mystics who practiced Chinese
boxing to train themselves both physically and
spiritually. As a result, the rebellion was called the
Boxer Rebellion by Westerners. The rebellion broke
out in the Shantung peninsula, which suffered
severe flooding and famines in the late nineteenth
century. To the Chinese these were signs that the
foreign Manchu CH'ING DYNASTY had lost its
divine mandate to govern the country. By 1899 the
rebellion had spread throughout northern CHINA
and received the support of some government
officials, who regarded it as a means of curbing
Western influence in the country. The Boxers
themselves were fanatic soldiers who believed that
by practicing certain magical rituals they could
render themselves invulnerable to bullets. Under
the influence of the Boxers the Chinese imperial
government declared war on the Western powers.
The Germans responded by invading PEKING. In
1901 the Chinese government surrendered and was
forced to make major political and territorial
concessions to the West and to pay an indemnity of
450 million dollars. (See also China article).
